Unlocking the value of your EHS solution

Original article from Trinity Consultants
Many EHS suite of applications available today are able to address multiple needs. However,  your emissions inventory or incidents management solution can be optimised to help your company achieve its broader EHS goals.
We’ve identified ten ways to maximise your current EHS solution.
  1. Use check list functionalities to manage and record inspections, sampling results, and internal audits
  2. Implement corporate safety guidelines using automated workflows to help improve safety and reduce incidents
  3. Track assets, raw-materials, or finished products using asset management and material tracking features
  4. Implement a management of change process and track process changes through your solution
  5. Use automated APIs and/or other data feeds such as laboratory sampling data, GIS coordinates, production accounting data, and waste manifest transactions with your solution to improve operational efficiency and accuracy
  6. Utilize the solution to better track and record completed tasks and repair work orders as required by your environmental permits
  7. Generate energy use and other Key Performance Metrics required for sustainability/CDP and other reports
  8. Automate data validation and calculations on data intensive and complex calculations reports to eliminate redundancy and manual errors
  9. Use dashboards and automated workflows to improve the information flow, visibility, and tracking of compliance health of plants and maintenance facilities
  10. Use real-time compliance data on dashboards and automated email notifications for EHS policy decisions and proactive management of impending non-compliance issues

How to maximise your EHS solution? Consider looking at the entire spectrum of EHS activities from a top down approach and breaking them into various categories. The following questions can be helpful to get started.
  • What functionalities are available in our EHS software?
  • How critical is this EHS business activity for our company?
  • What can we enhance, improve or optimise using the unused functionalities of the existing software assets we own?
This information can be captured in a matrix format and used to plan an EHS business process improvement project. The benefit of this exercise is better utilisation of the assets that you already have. Ultimately, it should reduce business risks; improve profitability through enhanced efficiency; reduce IT costs and provide an improved mechanism for managing global portfolios.
